An illustrative example of Fiction-mode cleanup — you never say “comma” or “quote.” Punctuation and capitals appear where they belong, dialogue gets wrapped in quotes with a new paragraph for the new speaker, and your character’s name is spelled the way you taught it. Not a screenshot.

Generic dictation saves you typing and hands you a bill: transcript sludge you have to reshape before it is fiction. Cleaning it up eats the speed you just gained.
What plain dictation leaves you
One run-on block. Dialogue with no quotes and no paragraph for the new speaker. Punctuation you spoke aloud sitting there as the words “comma” and “period.” Character and place names guessed wrong. So you stop writing and start editing.
What Murmurtale does instead
It formats as you dictate: real punctuation, paragraphs where the speaker changes, quotes around what is said, and names spelled your way. The text arrives as prose, so the speed you gained stays yours.

Built for the way you actually draft
Three things fiction writers need from dictation, and the parts of Murmurtale that do them.
An on-device pass labels each sentence as narration, spoken dialogue, or interior thought — quoting speech, breaking a paragraph when the speaker changes, and setting thought apart. It labels your sentences; it never rewrites them.

Every genre has its own rules.
Pick a genre and the cleanup conventions shift with it — dialogue punctuation, paragraph rhythm, the habits your readers expect. A thriller breathes differently than a romance, and your dictation should too.

Engines
Private today, cloud coming later
The founding-beta customer build is local-only. Its cloud controls and purchase buttons are disabled while we finish and validate that service separately.
Everything runs on your Mac
- Speech and cleanup happen on your device. Nothing you dictate leaves your Mac.
- Build 23 does not enforce a local word limit. Your invited account controls private beta download access, not what you are allowed to write.
- Dialogue quoting, dictionaries, and formatting are included.
A future option for harder audio
- The planned cloud engine is intended to improve transcription and dialogue on harder passages.
- It will be optional and will require an explicit choice before any dictation leaves your Mac.
- It is not available in the build being sent to beta customers today.
Beta entitlements remain visible, but Cloud is greyed out and paid upgrades are disabled. Founding-beta access requires no credit card. See Local vs cloud.
Where it stands
Mac first, and honest about it
Murmurtale is a menu-bar app for Apple Silicon Macs on macOS 14 or later. iOS and iPadOS share the same core and are coming after the Mac beta — they are not available yet, and this page will not pretend otherwise. You will find no invented reviews, no inflated numbers, and no borrowed logos here either: it is built for fiction writers, in the open, and the Help Center tells you exactly what does and does not work today.

Straight answers
Do I need an account or the internet?
An invited account and internet connection are required to request the private beta download, and the on-device speech model downloads once on first launch. After that, build 24 dictates locally without enforcing a word limit. Cloud processing and paid upgrades are disabled and marked coming soon.
Does it write for me?
Never. Murmurtale cleans up what you actually said — grammar, punctuation, dialogue formatting, and the spelling of your character names — and stops there. You are the author; your words stay yours.
What does it need to run?
A Mac with Apple Silicon on macOS 14 or later, and two permissions: Microphone and Accessibility. That is the whole list — see Permissions.
Where does my voice go?
In the founding-beta customer build, nowhere — audio is transcribed and cleaned up on your device, and the app cannot invoke the cloud engine. More in Privacy and authorship.
Why is Murmurtale a subscription?
There is no paid purchase in the founding beta. A future optional Pro subscription is planned to fund cloud processing, compatibility updates, model improvements, and support; its purchase controls remain disabled today.
What happens if I cancel?
There is no paid beta plan to cancel. Future subscription changes will never delete your dictations, dictionaries, or settings from your Mac. See Account and subscription.
Apply for founding access
Murmurtale is in a founding-writer beta on Mac. Leave your email and we’ll open a spot as the beta widens — no charge to apply, and you can withdraw anytime. The current beta is not available to residents of the EU, EEA, or United Kingdom.
Submitting sends exactly what you typed here — your email, country, and optional note — to the Murmurtale founding-access list. Read the Privacy Policy for how we use and retain it. To withdraw an application, email legal@officialbradpierce.com from the address you applied with. If the server can’t be reached, your text stays in the form and you get an email fallback instead. There is no checkout here today, and applying doesn’t create an account.
